RHYL DRIFT PARK

As part of the regeneration project of the West End of Rhyl, North Wales, BCA Architects of Liverpool were commissioned to design a new park on the Promenade. The Park was to include a Paddling Pool, Mini Golf, Outdoor Theatre, Children’s Play area, all surrounded by gardens with Pathways & Cycle Paths.


To enhance the appearance of the Promenade and Pathways, BCA specified a Natural Resin Bonded Stone finish, this to be Golden Pea Gravel to the main area and Staffordshire Pink to the Cycle Paths. Given the nature of the existing finish on the Promenade, a mixture of concrete, broken, cracked Tarmac etc. this was first “ planed “ off and a new black Macadam finish applied.

All the new Paths & Cycleways were also constructed with black macadam. The macadam was left to weather for two weeks, this to allow the “ flux oils “ to evaporate and to provide a stable surface onto which the Resin Bonded Stone could be laid. The surfaces were first mechanically swept by Coatech Ltd and lightly Heat Blasted with Hot Compressed Air to burn off any remaining oil or contamination. The entire area, some 7,000m2. were then primed with HAPAS Approved Rocbinda Resin, and then coated with Decorative Resin Bonded Stone using 1-3mm Golden Pea Gravel & 1-3mm Staffordshire Pink aggregate for the Cycle Paths.
